Sparring is for  any of our students who want to compete, or those who just want to improve their fitness and understand the application of all our techniques in the syllabus.  It consists of sparring drills and pad drills, sparring, fitness and body conditioning.

Strength, speed, reflexes and endurance are the basic principles behind our sparring program, if you think it’s a sport for the rough and tough, you’re wrong.  Kickboxing is a excellent way to help you achieve that toned body if your willing to work hard.

What’s it all about?
Scrap any ideas you have about beating a punching bag by yourself, kickboxing is very much a social sport. Classes concentrate on pad work, cardio workouts and sparring. Students help each other.

What can I expect at a class?
A typical class will start with a 10-minute warm-up, followed by about an hour and half of training  and finishing with a 10-minute warm-down. Classes will teach you how to punch and kick properly — it’s about technique not strength.

Don’t think that kickboxing is an easy ride though: it’s seriously hard work. It is a high intensity, full body workout that will keep you moving the whole time. When you’re not throwing a punch or a kick, you’re ducking and weaving — or doing squats and abdominal work.

What benefits will I see?
Weight loss, increased agility and coordination, muscle tone and greater fitness all result from kickboxing. It is actually a full cardio work-out for the whole body.

I’ve never sparred in my life. Will I be able to do it?
Kickboxing is all about technique so as long as you have basic knowledge of the techniques used you will be able to take part and further develop those skills.  It is usually recommended that people follow one of our other programs in order to gain these skills initially. If you’re not particularly fit then that’s not a huge problem. Fitness will automatically develop from taking part. Some people actually find it easier than running, especially for those with excess weight.  It ‘s not just a sport for the guys either; women actually pick up the combinations faster than men and can have more flexibility..

In summary
If it’s rapid toning and weight loss you’re after then boxing is something you should definitely check it out. It is quite a full on work-out though, and isn’t for everyone. Just go along to a taster class alone or with a partner and see what you think.
